After making his debut as a lyricist in Salman Khan starrer 'Garv' in 2004, Shabbir Ahmed went on to work with the 'Dabangg' star in films like, 'Partner', 'God Tussi Great Ho', 'Wanted', 'Race 3' and others. He has written lyrics of the song, 'Naiyo Lagda' from 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan'. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the lyricist opened up on the reactions he is getting for the romantic song and his experience of working with Yash in 'KGF: Chapter 2'. He talks about the people he looks up to in the industry and more. Excerpts... What kind of reactions have you been getting for Naiyo Lagda?

I am getting a fabulous response for 'Naiyo Lagda'. I am happy that people are loving the song. It doesn't matter if the song is modern, new or old, it should just have its soul and melody. Himesh Reshammiya has composed a very good melody for the song. Everywhere I go, people are approaching me to tell me how much they liked the song.

‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Did you feel any pressure while writing the song? I think the pressure is always there. Salman Khan is someone with whom you want to work with again and again. I felt the pressure because it is a big film and it is releasing on Eid. I had to make the song commercial and likeable. I had to keep in mind the combination of Salman-Himesh-Shabbir. When you work with different composers, you have different challenges and pressures. Salman has always trusted me a lot and has always encouraged me. I have tried to keep up to that trust that he has in me. After 'Pathaan', Salman's aura has reached another level. There are a lot of expectations.

Did you get a brief as to how the song should be?

I was told this was going to be the first time Salman Khan and Pooja Hedge will be seen romancing on screen. I was briefed that the song has to have simple and meaningful lyrics so that it is catchy. I am glad that people have liked the song.

You have worked with Salman Khan earlier too. How has your experience been so far? How is the actor as an individual? Salman Khan is a name that rings a bell in my heart every time I hear it. I love to work with him. He is a kind and helpful person by nature. He is someone who believes in giving opportunities to people. Whatever I am today is because of him. After the almighty, it is Salman Khan for me. He is my Godfather. He has done so much for me that I am forever indebted to him. I absolutely love him!

Was Yash co-operative as a colleague? Did he give suggestions to you for the lyrics? I loved working with Yash. Just like how Salman bhai sits during the recording and gets involved in the making, Yash also is the same when it comes to work. After working for the entire night and the next day till the night, I went home from the studio to take some rest. However, Yash did not give up. He stayed there even after I was gone and worked on the songs, music and scenes. I absolutely love to work with such dedicated people.

Salman Khan shared that Varun Dhawan mentioned to him that it was a wonderful film.

On a Saturday evening, the ‘Dabangg’ Khan made an entry at the Mehboob Studios and there is a frozen moment for the paparazzi who are glaring at him for a candid capture! At his jovial best, Salman Khan encouraged the media to do the ‘Munna Badnaam’ hook step with him. The actor then headed towards his tent where he indulged in an exclusive conversation with us talking about ‘Dabangg 3’, working with South stars, completing 3 decades in the industry, birthday plans and much more. Here are the excerpts from the interview: 

‘Dabangg 3’ is set for release, and you’ve taken an integral part in the scripting of this one, what was the thought process behind it? There was no thought process in this one. Thoughts just kept on flowing in. That is how this one was done. We brothers were sitting and chilling and we just thought that we should do ‘Dabangg’. How we should do ‘Dabangg’? We should get into New York, we should get into these places, I said no yaar. I said we should show how he became ‘Chulbul Pandey’. And that’s how it started falling in place. That’s how we started working on it. This is a very organic one for us. Very organic one! Because of the way one and two were written, it was easy for us to continue. But it also took 7 years for ‘Dabangg 3’ to release

We had already had that thing. Then I got busy into a lot of other films. So then, we got this time frame to do. So we did it in this time frame. You recently said at a promotional event that it’s not easy to work on a sequel because there are high expectations. What excited you to go for it and how did you convince Arbaaz Khan for ‘Dabangg 3’? The script. The script is always the most interesting part. If the script is interesting. you know, I'm interested. I'm interested, fans are interested. So that’s how it basically works. There were kickass dialogues in ‘Dabangg’ which became the USP of the movies. In ‘Dabangg 3’ what can one see? If something you can say, what is the USP of this one? (Laughs)We have a lot of things in this one and it is not forced. Now that Chulbul Pandey has become a caricature of himself. He's still the same guy. He's got more depth in fact. But he's the way he is. So the way he reacts to a situation, how he reacts in a serious situation, how he reacts is a comedy situation…When will he get irritated, when will he enjoy, what will be the counter dialogue? All these things are something to look for! Will we actually get to see a fan’s dialogue in the movie because you had a contest regarding it? You will see a lot of things in the film. Also these dialogues were not inspired by anywhere. They are original. Different kinds of dialogues, different kinds of scenes, which you can’t put in any other film. ‘Munni Badnaam’ was a famous song back then and it created a world record. With ‘Munna Badnaam’ can we get to see something like creating a world record? It just got released. It’s doing very well, let’s just see first. You launched Sonakshi Sinha in ‘Dabangg’ and it was an epic launch and now you have launched Saiee Manjrekar. What’s the quality is Saiee that stood out according to you? At that point of time the ‘Rajjo’ character needed Sonakshi and this time the character actually demanded Saiee Manjrekar. Saiee’s innocence, her sincerity, the way she is, the camera loves. Everything about her will stand out. When it comes to music, we have seen you humming a lot of old songs, at promotional events. In ‘Dabangg 3’, will we get to see that retro effect with the music, the kind of music you like? The kind of music ‘Dabangg’ has, you can’t hear that kind of music in any other film. Dabangg has got it’s own ‘Naina’... ‘Hud Hud’... ‘Munna Badnaam’... Dabangg has its own genre of music. So it’s very difficult to find that Dabangg kind of music in any film. So, so far we've been very happy and very lucky as well to get these kind of songs now, earlier and in the second one is well. Because it's a different kind of music. And people seem to like that but it's the same music in some other films will not work. The villain plays a crucial role in the movie and like you know in the earlier ones had Sonu Sood and Prakash Raj and now Kichcha Sudeep. What do you have to say about him and will you prefer venturing into South cinema? So this one first we are trying to release it there and let's see how this one does there because this is also their kind of film with a lot of heroism, songs, dance, emotions and family. So this is one actual film from here which fits into the South format of movies. Which their stars do. Like ‘Dabangg’ was also remade there. Very few movies…First, all our movies used to be remade there, especially my Dad’s movies. And then we started taking a lot of their remakes. In fact, I myself have done two. And ‘Dabangg’ was one which was remade there. So let’s see what happens. It will release in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. So now let’s see how the audience there accept us like the way we have accepted ‘Bahubali’ and their actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and Chiru Babua and others. What was your Dad’s feedback on ‘Dabangg 3’? Well he's liked it. He's liked it a lot. Otherwise, we had to leave our houses. Outdoors, outdoors, Outdoors... You have completed three decades in the industry starting from ‘Biwi Ho Toh Aisi’ to ‘Dabangg 3’, what do you’ve to say about it? This has been the best journey ever. What are your birthday celebration plans? So another generation will come in and we are going to spend time with them.

The reign of King Khans-Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh-appears to be fading, being replaced by the Age of Akshay Kumar. From interviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the 2019 Lok Sabha election to featuring in four releases in 2019-Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz-Akshay Kumar was the number one hero of 2019. It’s not just the sheer volume of work that he does-with at least three big-ticket releases every year, compared to Aamir and Shah Rukh who didn’t have any last year-it’s also Kumar’s choice of subjects that makes him a formidable force. While Kesari and Mission Mangal celebrated the pride of India, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz appealed to those who just want a laugh. The audiences, in turn, valued this range-these films earned a cumulative Rs 739 crore at the domestic box office.

Such is Kumar’s dominance that Salman-a usual topper in the india today Mood of the Nation Poll (MOTN)-had to share the top step on the podium this time around. Khan’s two releases-Bharat and Dabangg 3-didn’t meet box office expectations, so much so that they weren’t even the highest earners of 2019. That honour went to Shahid Kapoor-starrer Kabir Singh, foll­owed by the Vicky Kaushal-starring Uri: The Surgical Strike.

The biggest gainer from the previous edition of MOTN was Ayushmann Khurrana (ranked #3 this year), who has carved out a niche for himself in the comedic social comm­entary genre. While two of his releases in 2019-Dream Girl and Bala-fit that description, the actor has also demonstrated that he’s eager to break the mould. His hard-hitting turn as a police officer in Article 15, an investigative thriller centred on caste prejudice, was a refreshing change from the ‘flawed-but-affable boy next door’ image that his career has thrived on. Polling the same as Khurrana were Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh, Rajinikanth and Prabhas, along with Shah Rukh Khan, who may not have had a release but did produce the hit Badla (starring Amitabh Bachchan, who finished second).

Among actresses, there wasn’t much change in the results from the previous edition. Deepika Padukone retained the top spot while Anushka Sharma came in second, somewhat surprising given that neither had a single release in 2019. But the two did not spend the year out of sight-they both used their social media savvy to remain in the news, promote their brands and initiatives and occasionally share glimpses from their personal lives (including public displays of affection with their husbands). Another actress whose active online presence makes her a winner is Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, who also came in second, despite the failure of her first Hindi film in three years, The Sky is Pink.

Katrina Kaif (Bharat), Alia Bhatt (Gully Boy, Kalank) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan tied for third place, while Shraddha Kapoor (Saaho, Chhichhore), Kareena Kapoor Khan (Good Newwz), Vidya Balan (Mission Mangal), Sonakshi Sinha and Keerthy Suresh made quite a crowd at the fourth spot. (Happily, Kareena and Vidya’s resilience in the rankings suggests a thriving thespian career is certainly possible post-marriage.) Telugu star Nayanthara was a new entrant in the top 5.
